Fertility – Diagnostics & Management

As is true of all amedes fertility centers, Cologne Fertility Center benefits from extensive experience in the diagnosis and management of male and female infertility, including artificial insemination and egg and sperm cryopreservation.

Continuous medical training and education ensures that our experts in reproductive medicine and gynecology remain at the cutting edge of scientific research. You can rest assured that we will always choose the most promising approach tailored to your unique situation. Below you will find an overview of the most common procedures:

Diagnostic workup in involuntary childlessness

Before starting any treatment, each patient undergoes a thorough personal evaluation with laboratory studies, sperm quality analysis, and diagnostic imaging to identify possible fallopian tube disorders, if indicated.

Request

Ovarian stimulation

Hormones are administered over a period of several days, in the form of pills or daily subcutaneous injections in the abdominal skin, to induce the development of mature eggs in the ovaries. This procedure is indicated when ovulation is impaired or absent and for egg harvesting.

Enquiries

Intrauterine insemination

The term insemination refers to the insertion of specially prepared sperm into the uterine cavity. This technique is used when, for example, sperm motility is slightly impaired. This procedure can be performed during the natural cycle or following supplementary stimulation of egg development.

Request

Fertilisation via IVF or ICSI

In IVF (in vitro fertilization) and ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection), fertilization takes place outside the body. Prior to this, the ovaries are stimulated by hormones to produce several mature eggs. This is preceded by hormone treatment to stimulate ovarian production of several mature eggs. If sperm cannot be collected through masturbation, e.g., because ejaculation is not possible due to sperm ductobstruction, a cryoconserved testicular sample (cryo-TESE) may be utilized for ICSI. The resulting embryos are transferred back into the uterus after 2-5 days.

Request

Prenatal diagnostics

We also specialize prenatal medicine. Non-invasive studies include first-trimester screening, ultrasonography for malformations, genetic blood tests, echocardiography, and Doppler assessment. We also offer invasive procedures such as amniocentesis and chorionic villus sampling, when indicated.

Request

Cryopreservation & social freezing

The freezing of egg and sperm cells has been routine practice for many years. The reasons for this are varied: either medical, in cases of pending chemotherapy or other treatment toxic to germ cells, or non-medical (“social”), in the absence of a partner, for example (“social freezing”). In many cases, cryopreservation for medical reasons is covered by health insurance.

Request

Transparent workflows & processes

Facts & figures

In the 30-34 age group, it is 4 out of 10 women, and in the 35-39 age group, around a third. The average number of embryos transferred is 1.7.

High satisfaction

Voices of patients and couples

At six locations in Germany, we work every day to fulfil people's desire to have children. Here, happy parents talk about their fertility treatment.

You can read the detailed testimonials here.

"Our pregnancy was diagnosed two weeks after the first ICSI transfer in Bad Münder. We are totally happy, enjoying the pregnancy (with everything that goes with it...) and are really looking forward to our offspring..."

"Our findings were initially a mystery - ‘idiopathic’ infertility, i.e. without any recognisable cause... and in the end our daughter was born eleven days after ET."

"Our little miracle is now almost 3 years old. We are currently (2024) back with Dr Kundu, because we don't want our son to remain an only child."

"Dr Mebes gave me great support throughout the whole time... I am glad that I dared to become a mother on my own not only once, but also a second time."

"We felt comfortable in the practice from start to finish. All the doctors and medical assistants were super kind, patient and empathetic."

Frequently asked questions & answers on the unfulfilled desire to have children

When is the right time to contact the fertility centre?

Many women and couples are unsure how long they should wait before contacting a fertility centre. In general, it can be said that counselling and differentiated diagnostics are recommended if pregnancy has not occurred after 12 months of unprotected intercourse at the right time. For women over the age of 35, a diagnostic test is usually recommended after 6 months due to declining fertility. You can find out more about the right time for intercourse here.

What costs will we incur?

The costs depend on the type of treatment. Married couples receive a 50% subsidy from the statutory health insurance funds under certain conditions. People who have their main place of residence in North Rhine-Westphalia can receive federal and state subsidies under certain conditions. It is important to inform yourself well in advance, as the subsidies usually have to be applied for before treatment begins. You can find more information on costs and the possibilities of cost coverage here.

How long does the treatment at the fertility centre in Cologne take?

The duration of treatment for an attempt at therapy depends on the method chosen. An attempt at artificial insemination via IVF or ICSI usually takes around 4-6 weeks from the first contact, although this always depends on which diagnostics are required, whether a cost clarification with the health insurance company is necessary and how long this takes, etc. We will discuss the timetable and the individual steps on the way to your pregnancy after the diagnostics have been completed.

Does the Fertility Centre in Cologne also offer prenatal diagnostics?

Yes, in addition to fertility treatment, our clinic in Cologne also offers the following services: First trimester screening, organ ultrasound, echocardiography, Doppler ultrasound, prenatal tests, pre-eclampsia screening and invasive diagnostics, including amniocentesis. In the field of human genetics, we cooperate with the MVZ Institut für Klinische Genetik und Tumorgenetik Bonn GmbH.

Does the Fertility Centre Cologne also treat same-sex couples and single women?

Yes, around a fifth of patients at amedes fertility centres are solo mothers or lesbian couples. Before undergoing treatment with a sperm donor, our doctors will provide you with comprehensive information about the special features involved, the treatment procedure and the costs. You can find detailed information about donor sperm treatment here.
