Your path to your own child

We have been treating couples affected by involuntary childlessness at the Kinderwunsch-Zentrum Hamburg Barkhof since 2011. We help single women and lesbian couples to become pregnant with the help of donor sperm.
We attach great importance to personalised support from a permanent contact person as well as individual diagnosis and treatment. An experienced and empathetic team of interdisciplinary specialists is available to advise you individually, provide you with comprehensive information about the opportunities and risks and work with you to choose the best option for you.

Our services

Diagnostics, management & social freezing

Our fertility center in downtown Hamburg offers a comprehensive range of diagnostic and treatment services – in line with guidelines and always based on the latest research for the best possible outcome.

In about 30% of patients, involuntary childlessness originates in only one partner. In 30% of cases, both partners are affected, and in 10% there is no clear cause. Therefore, every fertility treatment begins with a thorough personal evaluation including laboratory studies, sperm quality analysis, and diagnostic imaging to identify possible fallopian tube disorders, if indicated.

Request

The most common cause of infertility is a hormonal disorder preventing ovulation and egg maturation. The maturation of egg cells can be stimulated with targeted hormone administration. Targeted hormone therapy can stimulate egg maturation. This is also undertaken prior to artificial insemination in order to obtain the necessary eggs. Ovarian stimulation is achieved either by taking tablets or by subcutaneous injections in the abdominal skin.

Request

Insemination involves the insertion of specially prepared sperm into the uterine cavity. This is a viable option in slightly impaired sperm motility. Depending on the findings, insemination can be performed during the natural cycle or after targeted stimulation of egg development.

Request

Artificial fertilization not involving the female body includes in vitro fertilization (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI). This is preceded by hormone treatment to stimulate ovarian production of several mature eggs.  Eggs are fertilized with sperm collected on the same day by masturbation or with cryopreserved sperm. Embryo transfer into the uterus follows after 2-5 days.

Request

Eggs and sperm can be cryopreserved for medical or social reasons. Medical reasons include protecting fertility in patients undergoing treatment that could potentially damage germ cells, e.g., chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Spare eggs may also be frozen as part of ICSI/IVF treatment in order to avoid the need for another treatment cycle involving ovarian stimulation and egg harvesting.  “Social freezing” refers to the proactive cryopreservation of egg or sperm cells without medical indication when planning to have children later in life. The cost of ‘social freezing’ is not covered by statutory health insurance.

Assessment of the success rate

Many people looking for the ‘best fertility centre in Hamburg’ are probably looking for specific information on success rates. With us, you can be sure that we communicate openly, honestly and transparently right from the start.

We will explain the possibilities and limitations of individual therapies at our fertility centre in Hamburg and give you a realistic assessment of your chances of success. Feel free to make an appointment for a non-binding initial consultation with us.

High satisfaction

Voices of patients and couples

At six locations in Germany, we work every day to fulfil people's desire to have children. Here, happy parents talk about their fertility treatment. Find out more here.

‘Our pregnancy was diagnosed two weeks after the first ICSI transfer in Bad Münder. We are totally happy, enjoying the pregnancy (with everything that goes with it...) and are really looking forward to our offspring...’

‘Our findings were initially a mystery - ‘idiopathic’ infertility, i.e. without any recognisable cause... and in the end our daughter was born eleven days after ET.’

‘Our little miracle is now almost 3 years old. We are currently (2024) back with Dr Kundu, because we don't want our son to remain an only child.’

‘Dr Mebes gave me great support throughout the whole time... I am glad that I dared to become a mother on my own not only once, but also a second time.’

‘We felt comfortable in the practice from start to finish. All the doctors and medical assistants were super kind, patient and empathetic.’

Frequently asked questions & answers about fertility treatment

When is the right time to contact a fertility centre?

Fertility decreases with increasing age. We therefore recommend contacting our fertility centre if you have not become pregnant after 12 months of regular, unprotected sexual intercourse at the time of ovulation. Women over the age of 35 are welcome to contact us after just 6 months in order to clarify the causes of involuntary childlessness and initiate treatment. If you would like to know more about the right time to get pregnant naturally, click here.

How much does fertility treatment cost?

The good news first: under certain conditions, health insurance companies will contribute to the costs of fertility treatment. The costs of hormone treatment are generally covered in full by statutory health insurance companies, while artificial insemination (IVF or ICSI) is subsidised by up to 50%. Unfortunately, this currently only applies to married, heterosexual couples within certain age limits and if other conditions are met. In principle, the subsidies must be applied for before the treatment. You can find out more about the topic and a specific cost estimate here.

How long does fertility treatment at the Kinderwunsch-Zentrum Hamburg Barkhof take?

The duration of treatment depends on how extensive the diagnostics are, whether cost clarifications with the health insurance company are required and which method of fertilisation is chosen. As a rule, you can expect treatment for IVF or ICSI to take 4-6 weeks. You will receive a detailed treatment plan from us with all the appointments on the way to your own child.

Does the fertility centre also treat same-sex couples and single women?

Of course. Approximately one in five patients is single or in a same-sex relationship. We advise lesbian couples and future solo mothers in detail about donor sperm treatment and the special features associated with it. We have summarised the most important information on this topic for you here.

Is fertility treatment still possible for women over 40?

We also treat women over the age of 40. However, if you still want to get pregnant at this age, you should not wait too long before undergoing fertility treatment. You should also be aware that statutory health insurance companies no longer contribute to the costs of such treatment once women have reached the age of 40 or men have reached the age of 50.
