Paths to your own child

Expertise and experience

For more than 25 years, the Dortmund Fertility Centre has been helping couples who have difficulties getting pregnant naturally. Lesbian couples also come to us to fulfil their wish of having their own child with the help of donor sperm treatment.
We know from experience that contacting us can be a little overwhelming. We would like to encourage you and assure you that we will treat you with sensitivity and empathy from the first conversation to the last appointment. At the Dortmund Fertility Clinic, you will have a competent team of specialists in gynaecology and obstetrics as well as gynaecological endocrinology and reproductive medicine at your disposal to support you during your fertility treatment.

Our services

Diagnostics, artificial fertilization, social freezing

Supported by experienced biologists, the medical team at our Dortmund fertility center offers you a full range of fertility treatment services, from diagnostic workup to hormone therapy and various modalities of artificial fertilization. Should you wish to postpone parenthood until later, we can also cryopreserve your eggs and sperm.

Promising treatment relies on a thorough diagnostic workup. Every fertility treatment therefore starts with a detailed medical history, laboratory studies and sperm quality analysis as well as imaging studies, if indicated.

Request

Lack of ovulation and disorders of egg development can impede or even prevent pregnancy by natural means. Many hormonal disorders can be treated with tablet or injection-based stimulation therapy. In order to harvest the required eggs, such treatment is also undertaken prior to artificial in vitro fertilization (IVF) and ICSI.

Request

Intrauterine insemination is a modality in artificial fertilization that does not require prior harvesting of eggs. In homologous insemination, the male provides a sperm sample, from which the most promising sperm cells are selected. These are then introduced into the woman's uterus via a thin catheter. Our Dortmund fertility center also offers the option of intrauterine insemination with donor sperm.

Request

In cases with impaired sperm quality and/or fallopian tube function, artificial fertilization can be performed outside of the female body through IVF (in vitro fertilization) and ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection). This involves fertilizing mature eggs, harvested after ovarian stimulation, with sperm previously obtained in the laboratory. After a maximum of five days, the embryos are transferred into the uterus at the Dortmund fertility center.

Request

Should you decide to postpone parenthood for the time being, you can have your germ cells (eggs, sperm) frozen (cryopreservation). Sometimes this is advisable for medical reasons, e.g., if treatment such as chemotherapy or radiotherap with its possible harmful effects on germ cells is planned. However, there are also social factors such as the lack of a partner or the decision to concentrate on one's career first. Cryopreservation of germ cells for these reasons is called social freezing. We will be happy to advise you on these aspects.

Request

In cases of known genetic hereditary disorders or an increased risk of genetic defects, genetic preimplantation diagnostics (PID) and polar body diagnostics (PBD) may be recommended. In PID, the embryo undergoes genetic testing before it is transferred into the uterus, while in PBD the egg is screened for possible genetic defects.

High satisfaction

Voices of patients and couples

At six locations in Germany, we work every day to fulfil people's desire to have children. Here, happy parents talk about their fertility treatment. Find out more here.

‘Our pregnancy was diagnosed two weeks after the first ICSI transfer in Bad Münder. We are totally happy, enjoying the pregnancy (with everything that goes with it...) and are really looking forward to our offspring...’

‘Our findings were initially a mystery - ‘idiopathic’ infertility, i.e. without any recognisable cause... and in the end our daughter was born eleven days after ET.’

‘Our little miracle is now almost 3 years old. We are currently (2024) back with Dr Kundu, because we don't want our son to remain an only child.’

‘Dr Mebes gave me great support throughout the whole time... I am glad that I dared to become a mother on my own not only once, but also a second time.’

‘We felt comfortable in the practice from start to finish. All the doctors and medical assistants were super kind, patient and empathetic.’

Frequently asked questions and answers on the topic of fertility and fertility therapy

When should I contact the Dortmund Fertility Centre?

We recommend an initial consultation at our Dortmund Fertility Centre if you have not become pregnant after 12 months of regular, unprotected intercourse during your fertile days. For women aged 35 and over, this recommendation applies after just 6 months. If you would like to know more about your fertile days during your cycle, you can find more information here. You can also make an appointment directly at our fertility centre to clarify the causes of your involuntary infertility.

What does fertility treatment at the Dortmund Fertility Clinic cost?

The following figures are only a rough guide. The exact costs for the treatment of your unfulfilled desire to have children in Dortmund are influenced by several factors, including diagnostics, treatment method, treatment cycles and cost sharing by the health insurance company. Insemination costs around €300 or around €1,000 with additional ovarian stimulation. IVF costs around €3,000 and ICSI around €4,000.

The costs of hormone treatment are usually covered by health insurance. In the case of insemination, IVF and ICSI, health insurance companies grant a 50% subsidy under certain conditions for women before the age of 40 and for men before the age of 50. We would be happy to give you more information about this in a personal consultation. You can find more information on costs and cost coverage here.

How long does my fertility treatment in Dortmund take?

At the Fertility Centre in Dortmund, we work with individual treatment plans. On average, a treatment cycle with IVF or ICSI takes around 4 to 6 weeks. You should expect a longer treatment period for special diagnostic measures and if the costs have not yet been clarified with the health insurance company. All patients who come to our Dortmund centre for diagnosis and treatment of their unfulfilled desire to have children receive a detailed treatment plan.

Who can take advantage of fertility treatment?

We treat heterosexual couples who are unable to conceive naturally, as well as married lesbian couples. Our patients come from all over North Rhine-Westphalia, from Düsseldorf to Bochum and Essen to Bielefeld. If you would like to find out more about treatment with donor sperm, you can find out more here or simply make an appointment for a consultation at your Dortmund fertility clinic.

Is fertility treatment still possible over the age of 40?

Fertility treatment at the age of 40 is still possible. However, as fertility decreases with increasing age, artificial insemination should not be postponed for too long. We would be happy to advise you individually on this topic at various locations in North Rhine-Westphalia (Dortmund, Siegen, Wuppertal or Dorsten) or at one of our fertility centres in Hamburg, Cologne, Hanover, Bad Münder or Trier. Please also note that statutory health insurance only covers the costs up to the age of 40.
